Garage slab thickness depends on the intended use, with a standard car garage generally needing a different specification to a workshop expecting heavier vehicles or equipment. An engineer or experienced concreter can advise on the right thickness for the specific load involved.
Formwork is the temporary structure, usually timber or steel, that holds wet concrete in its intended shape until it cures. Formwork built to the wrong dimensions or that shifts during the pour can throw the whole slab out of shape.
It depends on the condition and depth of the existing surface, since a new slab generally needs its own properly prepared and compacted base rather than sitting directly on old concrete. In most cases, the existing surface needs to be assessed first to work out whether it can be built on or needs to come out.
